A little bit different blog article this week – but I know you are going to like it. I have written about this before, but last year I went through Leadership Austin. And the best part of the class was all of the impressive people I met there. Many have become close personal friends.
One of those super impressive people is Erica Blue. She is the CEO of Austin Sunshine Camps (“ASC”) and has become a close friend. Because of her, I got to learn quite a bit about ASC. And once I learned, I was very excited when she asked me to get involved. ASC is having its annual Keeper Luncheon on March 26 so I am writing about it this week so that you can learn and be as excited about what ASC is doing as I am.
Transforming Lives Through Outdoor Education and Leadership
If you grew up going to summer camp, I think you will understand ASC’s mission. Summer camp was awesome as a kid – a lot of fun. But you parents out there also know how expensive it can be. As a result, many lower income families can’t afford to send their kids to summer camp. And that’s where ASC steps in.
ASC is a nonprofit organization that provides life-changing summer camp experiences and year-round programming for youth in Central Texas. Located in the heart of Austin, ASC serves children and young adults from low-income families, offering them the opportunity to develop leadership skills, build self-confidence, and form lasting friendships in an outdoor, summer camp experience. Through its programs, ASC fosters personal growth and community engagement, ensuring that every child has access to enriching experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.
History and Origins
In 1928 by the Young Men’s Business League (YMBL) of Austin founded ASC. The idea for the camp emerged from a commitment to serve underprivileged children by providing them with a place to enjoy nature and escape the challenges of urban life. The first camp sessions were held at Zilker Park, taking advantage of Austin’s natural beauty to give kids a summer retreat filled with adventure, learning, and camaraderie.
Over the decades, ASC has expanded significantly, and today it operates two camp locations: one at Zilker Park and another at Lake Travis. The camp has continuously evolved, integrating innovative programming to address the needs of the children it serves while maintaining its original mission of fostering community support and personal development among Austin’s youth.
Mission and Core Values
ASC’s mission is to provide the magic of overnight camp without the barrier of cost. It envisions a world where all children have a place to grow, connect, and explore.
Many of the children who attend ASC come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience summer camp. By offering a completely free program, ASC ensures that these children can enjoy outdoor activities, mentorship, and personal development opportunities. Campers participate in activities such as hiking, swimming, ropes courses, and leadership workshops, all designed to build confidence and resilience.
ASC operates under a set of core values that guide its work. This includes:
- Action
- Authenticity
- Compassion
- Connection
- Exploration
- Fun
- Growth
By following these core values, ASC provides an amazing camp experience that is not just fun but also a great learning and growth experience.
Impact on the Community and Campers
The impact of Austin Sunshine Camps extends far beyond the summer months. By providing a structured, supportive, and adventure-filled environment, ASC helps children develop crucial life skills that contribute to their long-term success.
Through its programming, ASC helps children develop essential social and cognitive skills. I have seen it firsthand through the testimonials of the campers. Its really amazing to see.
And ASC not only transforms the lives of individual campers but also strengthens the Austin community as a whole. By fostering a sense of responsibility, leadership, and community involvement, ASC creates a ripple effect that extends to families, schools, and neighborhoods. Many former campers return as counselors or volunteers, eager to give back to the program that helped shape their lives.
